We start at the main line when the signs point there. A sewage smell, gurgling pipes or water rising in the lowest drain all suggest a problem past the fixtures. We look, explain what we find, and price the work before we begin. Nothing starts until you agree.

Read the signs

The lowest drain gives the first warning. Check the basement floor drain and the lowest shower or tub.

Gurgling after a flush is another clue. So is a sewage smell that comes and goes.

One slow sink is rarely a main line issue. Two or three fixtures acting up at once usually is.

Find the cleanout

Most homes have a capped pipe where the main line can be reached. It is often near the floor drain or where the line leaves the house.

Knowing where it sits saves time. Keep it clear of boxes and stored items.

The City of Barrie's sewer protection page labels a cleanout on its diagram of the lateral, the pipe running from your home to the City main.

What blocks a lateral

The City lists grease and food waste, tree roots, settled pipes and sink grinders as causes of backups.

That list matters because it tells us where to look. A grease blockage and a root problem need different fixes.

Clearing a blockage is quick next to repairing a broken pipe. We tell you which one you are dealing with.

Whose cost is it

The City says the owner pays for a blockage between the property line and the house. If structural failure is confirmed on the City side, it reimburses plumbing costs up to $500.

We cannot decide which side of the line a fault sits on. We tell you what we find so you can speak to the City with facts.

What shapes the price

Three things move the number: how far along the line the problem sits, what is causing it, and whether the pipe needs repair or only clearing.

A repair that needs digging costs more than clearing a blockage. You hear the figure first, in plain terms, before we start.

Questions we get asked

What is the capped pipe near my basement floor drain?

It is often a cleanout, an access point to the main line. It lets a plumber reach the pipe without opening a fixture. If you find one, leave the cap on and tell us where it is. We will confirm what it serves.

Which drain backs up first, and what does that tell you?

The lowest drain in the house tends to show trouble first, because wastewater rises there when the main line is blocked. A backup in the basement floor drain, shower or tub points at the main. Upstairs fixtures stay clear until the blockage is severe.

A drain gurgles after I flush. Is that serious?

Once is not a worry. Gurgling that repeats, or comes with slow drains in more than one room, deserves a look. Air is being pushed out of a partly blocked line. Note which fixtures gurgle and when, and tell us on the call.

Does the City help with the cost?

Only in one case. The City says it reimburses plumbing costs up to $500 when structural failure is confirmed on its side of the line. Blockages between your property line and the house are the owner's cost. Keep your invoice and any records.

The City mentions a video inspection after a blockage. Do I need one?

The City's page advises one after a blockage is cleared, to find the cause, and asks for a copy when the problem may be on its side. We tell you at the visit whether that step makes sense for your house.

It is Saturday night and the floor drain is rising. What now?

Stop running water: no laundry, dishes or showers. Keep people and belongings away from the drain and shut off the power to anything standing in water. Then call us, since we are open all hours. Describe what you see.

What changes the price of a main line job?

Depth and distance matter, along with the cause and the pipe's condition. Roots and grease can often be cleared. A cracked or settled pipe needs repair. We explain which applies and give you the number before work begins.
